Brake Systems
Your vehicle's brake system applies frictional force to the wheels to slow or stop it. And that braking force is considerable. When you step on your brake pedal, you apply a stopping force ten times as powerful as the force that puts the vehicle in motion. The braking system can apply as much as 1,000 pounds of hydraulic pressure on each of the four brakes.
Service and Maintenance
The following inspections and maintenance procedures can help prevent potential brake problems and costly brake repairs. Check brake fluid level at every oil change. Replace fluid according to owner's manual recommendations or as advised by a certified technician. Brake calipers, rotors and wheel cylinders should be checked at every brake inspection and serviced or replaced as required.
Signs of Wear
Chirping, grinding or squealing noise or difficulty stopping the vehicle.

Heating & Cooling Systems
Your vehicle's heating and cooling system removes heat from the engine to keep it running at a proper temperature. In the cooling system, belts drive the water pump, circulating coolant throughout the system. Of course, in colder weather the warmed coolant is channeled through a heater core to heat the vehicle's interior and defrost the windshield. Heating and cooling systems are easy to take for granted, until something goes wrong. Here are a few tips.
Service and Maintenance
Maintain proper coolant levels and check level monthly. Never attempt to remove a radiator cap while the engine is hot. Serious injury could result. If the coolant level is low, add a mixture of coolant and water according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Inspect engine belts for signs of wear, cracks, shredding, etc. Check radiator, radiator cap and hoses for signs of leakage and wear.
Signs of Wear
Indication of hoses leaking, cracking, splitting, hardening, brittleness or lack of hot air from heater and defroster.

Exhaust Systems
Your vehicle's exhaust and emissions system muffles engine noise while reducing harmful fuel vapors and exhaust pollutants, and it's made up of a lot of parts. There are one or more catalysts, an oxygen sensor, maybe even a two-stage muffler. There's piping that's not only shaped to clear underbody lines, but also may be made of premium metals, in some cases dual-wall tubing. There are sheet metal underbody heat shields to prevent the exhaust from igniting dry grass.
Service and Maintenance
With today's computerized engine systems, maintaining your vehicle's exhaust and emissions system is best left to a professional technician. Have the positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV) inspected at regular intervals. If the system is not operating properly, your vehicle may be hard to start, run rough, be excessively noisy and emit harmful contaminants that will enter the environment. While exhaust repairs can be expensive, regular inspections and maintenance can help you avoid the necessity of replacing a large majority of the system all at once.
Signs of Wear
Loud exhaust noise, rattling noise from under car.

Electrical Systems
Your vehicle's electrical system is its life blood. Not only does it start a vehicle's engine and maintain a charge on the battery, it also provides power to the electrical accessories and ignition system. The electrical system provides the needed "spark" to operate a vehicle's ignition coil, spark plugs and the numerous sensors that control a vehicle's performance and safe operation.
Service and Maintenance
Proper maintenance is important to insure uninterrupted operation of a vehicle's electrical system. This includes regular inspection of battery cables and posts for signs of wear or corrosion. Check all vehicle lights–including headlights, taillights, turn signals and emergency flashers–to be sure they are operating at full brightness.
Signs of Wear
A dim light or slow flashing turn signal could be a sign of weak alternator. A hesitation when the car is started needs to be checked out.

Powertrain System
E & G provides inspection, maintenance and repair to all powertrain system components including engine, transmission (manual or automatic), suspension and associated components. The powertrain system in today's vehicles is a sophisticated integration of mechanical and electronic sub-systems. Whether it's front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, automatic or standard transmission, the modern powertrain system is designed to provide an optimum balance of performance, economy and safety, as long as its components are properly serviced and maintained.
Service and Maintenance
The life blood of the powertrain system are the various fluids and control mechanisms that keep it operating smoothly. Follow the recommendations in the vehicle's owner's manual for all fluid changes (oil, transmission and coolant) and have all powertrain components inspected on a regular basis.
Signs of Wear
In modern vehicles, the "Check Engine" light serves as the gatekeeper to a vehicle's powertrain system. If it lights, the vehicle should be checked. Oftentimes, the problem is minor, but you won’t know until a certified mechanic has evaluated the system. Other signs of wear in the powertrain system are:
- Engine–Rough running, high oil and/or fuel consumption, visible smoke while engine is running.
- Automatic Transmission–Slow shifting between gears, slippage, or evidence of fluid leaking.
- Manual Transmission–Slippage, lack of transmission engagement or inability to shift smoothly.
- Suspension–Rough riding, poor braking, abnormal tire wear, vehicle pulls to one side, or signs of fluid leaks.

Tune-Up & Performance
It seems like only yesterday that any backyard mechanic could buy spark plugs, ignition parts and an air filter and spend Saturday morning giving the family sedan a tune up. Not any longer. True, most vehicles are still internal combustion engines, but modern fuel and engine management systems pretty much prevent driveway tune-ups.
System components now include fuel injection, throttle positioning sensors, mass air flow sensors and more. Given the sophistication and integration of these systems, tune-ups are best left to a trained technician.
Service and Maintenance
While today’s vehicles may have fewer user-serviceable parts, they still need regular tune-ups to maintain performance and optimum fuel economy. Consult your owner’s manual for recommended intervals or see your local mechanic if the vehicle hesitates or stalls or if there are any abnormal engine noises or you notice fuel odors.
Signs of Wear
Engine hesitation, stalling, decline in engine performance, “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon” light illuminates.

Tire & Wheel Service
Choosing tires for your vehicle is a serious decision. Tires can affect how your vehicle feels, how it handles, the way your vehicle brakes, the feel of your suspension, and even your fuel economy. E & G provides inspection, maintenance and repair to all tire and wheel components. Poor tire maintenance can be costly or dangerous, leading to premature tire wear or a tire blowout. You can visually inspect one's tires monthly basis to prevent such problems. Here are a few steps you can take.
Service and Maintenance
There are a few tire maintenance tasks that should typically be performed by a professional and on a regular basis. Tire rotation changes the orientation of the tires. This should be done about every 6,000 miles in order to ensure even wear. Wheel balancing limits the vibration of the tire and wheels and thus minimize wear and extend the life of the tire. Wheel alignment ensures proper steering and minimizes tire wear. Wheels should be aligned about every 12,000 miles. Check air pressure monthly when the tires are cold. Checking hot tires can result in higher pressure ratings.
Signs of Wear
Too much air pressure (over inflation) and only the tire’s middle section touches the road and creates uneven wear. Too little air pressure (under inflation) and only the tire's sides touch the road and create uneven wear on both the edges of the tire. Erratic tread wear may mean the wheel is out of balance or that shock absorbers need to be replaced. Tread wear only on one edge of the tire usually occurs when wheels are out of alignment.
